Container Corridor (ContainerCor)

The ContainerCor is the backbone of South Africa’s overall rail freight network and its efficient and effective functioning is critical to promoting the country’s economic growth.

This corridor is the rail artery to the port of Durban and plays a key role in connecting the Port of Durban to the hinterland, as well as in connecting inland freight terminals serving the Gauteng area and neighbouring countries. Containers, fuel, grain, motor vehicles and other general cargo are the main commodities railed on the corridor.

Overview & Map of the Container Corridor (ContainerCor)

Overview

The Container Corridor links the Port of Durban with the Gauteng economic hub through a 688km long rail network. This corridor enables direct railing of strategic commodities from the Port of Durban to the inland terminals of City Deep, Kascon, Pretcon, Kaalfontein and several private sidings in the Gauteng area and beyond. The corridor is a key logistical enabler of South Africa’s import and export freight transportation and is vital in the orchestration of economic growth for the country and the region. Commodities and dominant industries serviced and railed in the corridor includes Containers, Automotive, Grain, Fuel, Chemicals, Coal and FMCG General Freight cargo.

There is a significant opportunity for general freight business growth on rail especially with the increase in logistics hubs and back of port facilities being developed by the private sector across this corridor. The ContainerCor boundaries are Port of Durban to Port Shepstone on the KwaZulu Natal South Coast up to Stanger on the North Coast and Pietermaritzburg to Newcastle and then Johannesburg in the Gauteng Province.
