We are a South African freight rail company of choice operating across the country in multiple economic sectors and industries. Our business is to move broad range of bulk and general freight commodities including mining, agriculture, manufacturing goods, bulk liquids, containerized freight and automotive units and components.

We operate the largest railway in Africa and the Middle East. We are a division of Transnet SOC Ltd, a public company (constituted in terms of the Legal Succession Act of 1989), with the South African Government as the sole shareholder. Transnet owns South Africa's railway, ports and pipelines infrastructure.

Our rail network infrastructure and rail services are made up of 1,500 km heavy haul lines and 3,928 km of branch lines. We cover all six major rail corridors in South Africa to transport commodities for export, regional and domestic markets.

We provide a rail network infrastructure and we operate freight rail services over six major rail corridors across South Africa. Our network infrastructure and freight rail services are the engines that drive supply chains for domestic, regional and global markets. We are leaders in the movement of commodities for export, regional and domestic markets. We provide a freight rail service on our 22,000 route kilometer and 30 000 track kilometer rail network. Our rail network service delivers strategic linkages between ports, terminals, mines, farms, factories and other production centers. Our bigger purpose and the value we bring is to orchestrate regional and global integration of the South African economy.


We have capacity transport to transport 3.6 to 4.5mt per week. Our 26 995 strong workforce and our fleet of 2 345 locomotives and 71 675 wagons can handle over 225.5mt in freight volume per year. We operate a world-class heavy-haul coal and iron ore export lines. We have extended this capability to export manganese from the Northern Cape mines through the Gqeberha and Saldhana Ports. The Freight Rail network and rail service supports regional integration of economies of member countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
