Cape Corridor (CapeCor)

The CapeCor has the largest area footprint in freight rail, stretching from Warrenton in the north-east to Cape Town in the south and from Hotazel in the north-west to Gqeberha in the south-east. CapeCor is the natural hinterland for the ports of Cape Town, Mossel Bay, Gqeberha , Ngqura and East London. We have incorporated the areas of Bethlehem and Kroonstad into the CapeCor.

This corridor provides connects mining area around Hotazel to the ports of Gqeberha and Ngqura in the south-east, providing the primary export channel for South Africa’s manganese exports. Corridor connections between these mines and the Central Corridor (CentralCor) also enable the transport of manganese and iron ore for the domestic market.

CapeCor has various branch lines such as the Bellville-Bitterfontein and De Aar-Upington line, as well as sections of the Bloemfontein to East London and Gqeberha lines which provide rail access for agriculture.

Our Corridor in Detail

Overview

The Cape Corridor is our main manganese export channel that runs from the mining block in Hotazel in the Northern Cape and connects to the Ports of Gqeberha, East London and Cape Town.  In addition to its core commodity, Cape Corridor boasts a wide-ranging general freight and agriculture commodity business focus with volume growth increasing annually. Some of these commodities include domestic iron ore, cement, non-ferrous metals, containers, titanium, lime, malt, barley, grain, fertilizer, zirconium, automotive, wheat and maize. It links mines and the Central Corridor thus enabling transportation of iron ore for domestic markets.

Its inland terminal in Bellville connects freight rail services to the Port of Cape Town through a container rail shuttle service. Its extensive rail network which spans four provinces, provides a dynamic interconnection involving freight rail services, connecting branch lines, mainline links to major ports, other TFR corridors through the Reef, Ore line and Namibia. Operational depots include Upington, East London, Bloemfontein, Belville, Kimberley North, Kimberley South and Gqeberha. The Corridor is well positioned to support industry and other stakeholders’ initiatives for freight rail demand.
