A Comprehensive Depth Management Service

Depth Management involves the provision of a holistic lump sum price type service. The customer states his depth requirement, and for a fixed price, Dredging Services ensures these.
The advantage to the customer is that he would not need to be involved with the details of the dredging activities, or be exposed to the varying costs of executing each of these activities.

Dredging Services

Dredging Services, founded in 1988, is a business unit of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) that offers dredging and hydrographic surveys of ports. TNPA owns, operates and controls South Africa’s port system, consisting of eight commercial seaports along the South African coastline on behalf of the State.

It is responsible for the safe, effective and efficient economic functioning of the national port system. TNPA’s role includes managing the port system in a landlord capacity and providing port infrastructure and marine services to the eight ports in Richards Bay, Durban, East London, Ngqura, Port Elizabeth, Mossel Bay, Cape Town and Saldanha. Marine services provided include dredging, aids to navigation, ship repairs and marine operations.

TNPA's vision is "A system of ports, seamlessly integrated in the logistics network that is jointly and individually self-sustainable through delivery of high levels of service and increasing efficiency for a growing customer base, enhancing South Africa’s global competitiveness and facilitating the expansion of the South African economy through socially and environmentally sustainable port development"

Older vessels include the Ingwenya trailer hopper dredger, the Crane dredger and the Impisi plough tug. The new equipment is being acquired not only to cater for the needs of the South African port system but to support ports in Southern Africa, as part of Transnet’s Africa strategy to help African countries to grow their economies. It also includes equipment for capital dredging for new port developments.

The Ilembe contract includes construction of a combination workboat / hydrographic survey boat (Inyosi). This will be used to take stores, spares and crew to the Ilembe and will accompany the Ilembe to other ports. It will enable the Ilembe to be self-sufficient, saving on fuel as it won’t have to move around the port and will not require tugs to transport crew and spares.

The workboat can be lifted onto the Ilembe using its crane. Royal IHC has sub-contracted the manufacture of the Inyosi to a Cape Town based company – Nautic Africa - as part of the supplier development aspect of its contract in order to create jobs, pass on expertise and develop skills. All contracts for new equipment include a supplier development component comprising 25 percent of the value of the contract, for local manufacture of parts, as well as skills transfer.

Hydrographic Survey Equipment

Dredging Services operates a number of hydrographic survey launches fitted with state-of-the-art positioning systems, echo sounders and computers for data collection and processing.

All hydrographers use PDS 2000 and Hypack software for obtaining, processing and plotting of data.
